2. RISK EVALUATION

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could lead to sensitive information disclosure and reflected cross-site scripting.

3. TECHNICAL DETAILS

3.1 AFFECTED PRODUCTS

The following versions of Smart Security Manager, a software management platform, are affected:

  • Teamcenter Active Workspace v4: All versions prior to v4.3.9
  • Teamcenter Active Workspace v5.0: All versions prior to v5.0.7
  • Teamcenter Active Workspace v5.1: All versions prior to v5.1.4

3.2 VULNERABILITY OVERVIEW

3.2.1    GENERATION OF ERROR MESSAGE CONTAINING SENSITIVE INFORMATION CWE-209
The affected application allows verbose error messages, which allow leaking of sensitive information, such as full paths.
CVE-2021-33711 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 5.3 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N).
3.2.2    CROSS-SITE SCRIPTING CWE-79
A reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists in the web interface of the affected devices that could allow an attacker to execute malicious JavaScript code by tricking users into accessing a malicious link.
CVE-2021-33710 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 6.1 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N).
3.2.3    EXPOSURE OF SENSITIVE INFORMATION TO AN UNAUTHORIZED ACTOR CWE-200
By sending malformed requests, a remote attacker could leak an application token due to an error not properly handled by the system.
CVE-2021-33709 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 4.3 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N).

4. MITIGATIONS

Siemens recommends applying updates where applicable:

Siemens has identified the following specific workarounds and mitigations users can apply to reduce the risk:

  • Avoid untrusted files from unknown sources in Teamcenter Active Workspace.

As a general security measure, Siemens strongly recommends protecting network access to devices with appropriate mechanisms. In order to operate the devices in a protected IT environment, Siemens recommends configuring the environment according to the Siemens Operational Guidelines for Industrial Security and following the recommendations in the product manuals.

CISA recommends users take defensive measures to minimize the risk of exploitation of this vulnerability. Specifically, users should:

  • Minimize network exposure for all control system devices and/or systems, and ensure that they are not accessible from the Internet.
  • Locate control system networks and remote devices behind firewalls, and isolate them from the business network.
  • When remote access is required, use secure methods, such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), recognizing that VPNs may have vulnerabilities and should be updated to the most current version available. Also recognize that VPN is only as secure as the connected devices.

CISA reminds organizations to perform proper impact analysis and risk assessment prior to deploying defensive measures.
